Under The Phog (Part 4, Final Chapter)

Kobe woke up in a hospital bed with his hand resting underneath the warm hand of Angel Lake. He looked up at her, she smiled back softly.

“He lives,” she said playfully running her fingers over his shaved head. “How are you?”

“I think the better question is where the hell am I now?” Kobe said looking around dizzily in the hospital room. “How long have I been here?”

Slowly, Kobe sat up in the bed and began to retell his too real to be a dream tale to Angel Lake. Along the whole way, she nodded and not once looked at him like he was crazy. When he finished, she smiled, squeezed his hand and looked at him sternly in the eyes.

“I can take you there,” she said with a gentleness in her voice that was paired with a firm sense of truth and belief in her man. Her eyes began to fill with tears. “My grandma and her sister took Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West there, my mother and her sister took Magic and Kareem there, I think it’s only fitting that I take you.”

“And I was right by Michael’s side when Ms. Chicago took him there,” Phil Jackson said walking into the hospital room, pacing his way over to the bed and resting his right hand on Kobe’s shoulder.

“And we’ll be there every step of the way too,” Derek Fisher said walking into the room, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Ron Artest trailing behind him. “You know we always have been.”

One by one the rest of the Lakers filed into the room, Bynum hobbling in on crutches, Matt Barnes with a determined scowl on his face, and Steve Blake with a look of a servant ready to do anything he could to help out. Kobe looked around at the guys feeling a new sense of confidence fill all the weaknesses of his body. He smiled his patented no tooth, Kobe grin, then quickly switched over to the lower jaw out, Hannibal Lector-esque look of determination.

“Let’s go get another ring,” Kobe said staring off into the distance, unfazed by the rising heat of the hospital room.
